Roof Cleaning
Black streaks, moss and algae removed with a soft wash treatment that protects the shingle — the method asphalt manufacturers actually recommend.
Those dark stains are gloeocapsa magma, an airborne algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It holds moisture against the roof, shortens shingle life and drives up cooling costs. Left alone it spreads into moss, which lifts shingle edges and pushes water sideways under the courses.
High pressure strips the protective granules off asphalt shingles and voids most warranties. We apply a low-pressure cleaning solution that kills the organism, then let rain and time carry the residue away. The roof keeps its granules and the growth does not come straight back.
Each roof is walked and assessed before anything is applied.
A cleaning costs a fraction of a replacement and can add years to a shingle roof. On homes in Lenox, Dalton, the Pioneer Valley and the shaded hill towns of our service area we generally suggest a look every three to five years.
No. Soft washing is the method asphalt shingle manufacturers recommend. Pressure washing is what voids warranties, and we do not pressure wash roofs.
